There are situations in which we need to speak both in business life and in education. Public speaking can be a difficult and boring situation for some people. But it is a situation that many people cannot escape from. Actually, there is no situation to be afraid or forced while speaking.

There are only cases that need attention. After all, the speech should be effective so that it reaches its goal. Speaking effectively depends on good practice. If you prepare well and pay attention to certain situations, it is inevitable that your speech will be fluent and effective. I tried to specify below for you what needs to be done for an impressive speech.

If you want to listen and take as an example for speaking effectively, you should definitely check Ted talks.

Speaking Effectively Step 1: Start Early!

If you need to speak, the first thing you should do is; The moment you know you are going to give a speech, it should be starting to prepare. Start at the earliest opportunity, without delay so you have the chance to prepare comfortably and carefully. The more time you spend speaking, the more adaptable you will be.

Speaking Effectively Step 2: Analyze Your Audience!

To whom you make the speech, the greatest value that gives you information in preparing a speech. Analyze well to whom to speak. Certainly, the audience has something in common, by this, you can understand how speaking effectively is the bomb.

Try to reach this common side if possible. If you include the common aspects of the listeners in the conversation, you can easily attract the listeners to the subject. Apart from that, look for detailed information about education levels. The sentences you make, the questions you will ask and the questions you may ask will depend entirely on the educational background of the listener.

Your priority is to say what they want to hear. Especially at the beginning of the speech, be careful to tell them what they want to hear so that they give all their attention.

The strongest side of making a speech or presentation is the “audience”. Seeing and experiencing how they are curious, how their eyes grow, how they hold their breath, how their heart rate accelerates, whether they have fun or not, are the most important interactions that magnify you. Every speaker has something to learn from his/her audience.

Where you are on the stage, right in front of you, is the center of transformation. There is a great interaction here and a chance for speaking effectively. Sources of motivation, sensitivities, expectations, dreams for the future and reality of the present are understood here. The connection is established here. New possibilities are fired here.

Especially in the business world, “professional speakers” are oddly not interested in this for speaking effectively. It’s as if everything is one-sided when it comes to business and there is no need for interaction. And as a result, they’re losing their audience by focusing only on what they want to say.

The process of defining your target audience literally allows you to gather insights that allow you to come up with a story that will help you reach your goals. The better you know your audience, the more information you gather about them, and the more you try to understand them, the more this will magnify your story, increase its impact, and gain perspectives that will strengthen the message you want to convey. Not to mention how easy it will make the process of creating the story.

Speaking Effectively Step 3: Don’t Chase to Make a Difference!

During our journey through time and space, there comes a moment when we meet someone who is incredibly ‘pretentious’. Sometimes the size of their artificiality almost overwhelms us! We can’t believe how much they “show off”. “How they don’t realize they are just deceiving themselves about themselves!

How dare they give themselves a superior air with such a visible superficiality? Usually, there is at least one such person in an ordinary group of people. We can probably tolerate a person. Sometimes they go to extremes so harmlessly that we find them really funny. But when they have more than one person, we start asking ourselves if we are in the right place!

The word contrived means pretending to be someone or something that someone is not.

At least it looks that way when we look at it from the outside. Such people are sure that they are superior and special in every way. But this is their… problem! How do we deal with them and how we feel and react, and that is ‘our problem’. We cannot control how they see themselves. We cannot control behavior that seems arrogant to us.

We cannot know why those people developed a false identity so obviously. This may be just a defense mechanism they developed because they had to live with ‘unusual’ parents as children. It can also be the result of a traumatic experience. Maybe they’ve learned to imitate someone like that. Who knows? However, this is not our problem. Listening to such people is also boring for us. Speaking effectively is not an option when you are boring.

So don’t strain yourself to make a difference. Trying to make a difference is always fraught with risks. You may not be able to make the difference, or the different narrative style you create may not suit the audience.

The important thing is to attract the audience to you for speaking effectively. You can do this with a sincere conversation in most conversations.

After all, everyone is different from each other even if they make the same sentences. The biggest reason that makes this difference is the tone of your voice. Other factors that make your difference after the tone of voice are your diction, gestures and facial expressions.

Speaking Effectively Step 4: Try to Engage the Audience in the Conversation

This is one of the ways to get the audience’s attention. Allow dialogues in your conversations so that you can show speaking effectively is not so hard for you. If you need to give an example, get examples that may be in your audience’s lives whenever possible. Even if each of them finds a specific sentence in your speech, it is enough for them to listen to you until the end.

Ask your audience questions for speaking effectively in a presentation. Let the questions you ask be questions that they can answer immediately. In this way, they will find themselves in the conversation. The listener who finds themselves in the conversation will now start to look with your eyes.

Don’t get past the questions. There is nothing better than interrupting your speech with questions in a presentation. This shows that the audience is listening attentively. So when asked questions, don’t miss the opportunity. If it’s a topic that you will touch upon in a moment, answer the question by wrapping your presentation a little forward.

Question and answers add an atmosphere of dialogue to the conversation and strengthen the presentation especially for speaking effectively. For this reason, make sure that your audience does not hesitate to ask questions and be sure to answer when asked.

Asking simple questions to get the audience in action can be contrived for speaking effectively. Instead, ask a question that neither the audience nor you know the answer. Explain why you don’t know and what can be done to find out.

Most speakers try to impress the audience by asking only questions for which they know the answer. This often backfires. The question you are going to ask will help you to maintain a humble profile and keep the audience interested.

If a microphone cannot be provided to the audience, it is often impossible for the whole hall to hear the question posed by an audience. For this reason, be sure to repeat the incoming question before answering. Repeating questions not only helps the audience, but also saves you time to find the best answer to give.

Speaking Effectively Step 5: Rehearse Lots!

To do all of these, all you have to do is take your notes and rehearse a lot. Each rehearsal erases at least one mistake and adds at least one added value to your speech. Your chances of delivering effective speech without lots of rehearsals are low. Do not take rehearsals as business. Search and try to make rehearsals fun.

One of the elements that we can say is indispensable in the life of entrepreneurs is tension. Different factors may strain you, such as interviews, investment interviews, and presentations. It can be helpful for you to rehearse to relieve your tension. If you are faced with these situations for the first time, you may inevitably feel nervous. People often feel anxious about what they don’t know.

So the tension situation will be very normal. Whatever you are doing, rehearsing beforehand will relax you. That’s why rehearsing before and doing what you will do after the tense situations will contribute to you in a serious way.
