Who is Fatma Nudiye Yalçı?

Socialist writer Fatma Nudiye Yalçı, whose name is not mentioned much in history, was born in 1904 in Kasımpaşa. The child of a partially wealthy family, Fatma Nudiye Yalçı studied at Notre Dame de Sion French High School. Nudiye, who was not on good terms with her high school instructors, continued her education at home with a German teacher after the French school was closed due to the necessity of the alliance with the Germans during the First World War.

After graduating from Istanbul University, Department of Philosophy, Fatma began to frequently go to the opposition magazine “Resimli Ay” during this period. Nudiye met the writer Nizamettin Nazif during this period and married her on March 14, 1932. The first article of Fatma Nudiye ever discovered was published in the journal “Yedigün” on her husband. However, this marriage did not last long and they separated in 1933.

Fatma Nudiye Yalçı does not only write and read in a political context but also produces works in the field of theatre. The play ‘Beyoğlu 1931’, which she wrote, although it is not well known, makes her the first female playwright from Turkey.

The theatre is written in 1932, in 5 acts. Nudiye sheds light on social corruption in this work. It was announced in Darülbedayi Magazine that the play would be staged, it was included in the repertoire but not staged.

Fatma Nudiye Yalçı, who is ostracized by her family because of her views, is only taken care of by her mother. Despite all the negative conditions, Nudiye continues to learn and produce simultaneously.

She goes down in the time book as one of the women that history ‘deems appropriate’ to leave it in the back pages. But it brings important Marxist works to Turkish. Some of those; ‘Maymunun İnsanlaşması Prosesinde Emeğin Rolü’’, ‘Engels; Klasik Alman Felsefesinin Sonu ve Ludwig Feuerbach’,Marx; Enternasyonel İşçiler Cemiyetini Açış Hitabesi’’ Marx ve Marksizmin Prensipleri,’ is ‘Engels’. She also writes children’s fairy tales such as “Emekçi Yavrusunun Hikayeleri” and “Güneşin Çocuğu Gölgenin Çocuğu”.

Prison Years

Fatma Nudiye Yalçı was detained together with Kıvılcımlı in 1938 because a student’s brochures from the Kıvılcımlı library were found in a student’s locker for the Yavuz Battleship. As a result of the trials held in the Yavuz Battleship, she was found guilty of inciting the army to rebellion and engaging in communist activities. She spent ten years in Sinop Prison. She was released in 1948.

After being released from prison four years later, Doctor Kıvılcımlı got married to Emine Hanım, whom he only saw through the window of the prison and fell in love with since his days in Sultanahmet Prison.

Although Emine Hanım mistook the person she saw through the window to be Nazım Hikmet, Dr. She recognized the person She fell in love with through the letter that Hikmet sent with his mother. Even after this event, Nudiye continues to Dr. She did not break with Kıvılcımlı. In 1954, she was elected as a member of the Vatan Party, founded by Doctor Kıvılcımlı, and participated in the party’s activities.

During the 1957 election campaign, Fatma Nudiye was injured by a piece of a brick thrown while giving a speech at the eventful rally in Sirkeci. She was arrested along with the other leaders of the Vatan Party, which was closed in 1958, by being prosecuted for the crime of “bringing men from work to power”. She was acquitted from the trial in which she was imprisoned for two years.

Fatma Nudiye Yalçı did not take part in political movements after the 1960s. She went abroad for cancer treatment in 1965. Passed from Romania to Bulgaria. Between 1967-1969, she worked for the TKP organ Bizim Radyo in the city of Leipzig, East Germany. She died in Sofia in 1969. His body was buried in Sofia.
